If you are considering putting a new roof on your home, you may want to consider using metal as your material of choice. While roofs can use many different materials, the benefits of metal roofs are well worth considering for your home.

What are Metal Roofs?

Essentially, they are the same as any other roofing material, but you do have choices when it comes to the specific type of metal that you want to use.

–       Aluminum

–       Copper

–       Galvanized Steel

–       Zinc

Any one of these metals can be used for your roofing needs, just be sure that it has been tested and labeled as such by FM Global, UL or the equivalent source so that it will have all the benefits that you want.

The Advantages of Metal Roofs

The benefits of metals roofs are considerable when you take into account the sturdy materials from which they are made.

Durable: When you consider how vulnerable asphalt roofs are to wind and especially hail damage, metal roofs are simply far better in terms of how they will hold up under the stress. A typical metal roof will withstand wind gusts of up to 140 mph and substantial hail that would compromise asphalt roofs. In addition, they require virtually no maintenance as they do not crack or corrode over time depending on the metal that is used.

Lifespan: A typical asphalt roof will last upwards of 20 years before it needs to be replaced. Metal roofs however can last up to 70 years depending on the material that is chosen.

Reflective: A metal roof reflects solar energy which means that during the summer your cooling costs may drop by upwards of 25% depending on all relevant factors.

In addition, metals roofs will not ignite due to a lightning strike or other ignition source and they are partially made from recycled materials. When removed, they roofs can be fully recycled making them very environmentally friendly.

The Disadvantages of Metal Roofs

Although the many benefits of metals roofs make them an attractive option, they do have some issues that will need to be considered.

Expense: A metal roof is up to three times more expensive than an asphalt-based one. So, if you are not planning on staying in your home very long, it may not be worth the extra expense to purchase one of these roofs.

Noisy: During a heavy rain and especially a hailstorm metal roofs can become quite noisy. This can be problematic if such a storm strikes in the middle of the night and you are trying to get some sleep. However, thicker insulation can help muffle the sound that is created.

Possible Low Grade Materials: If the metal is sub-par or not put together well, there can be serious issues if there are any leakages or separations that develop over time.

Overall, the benefits of metal roofs certainly outweigh any disadvantages, especially if you use top-grade materials and a qualified company doing the installation. A good metal roof can not only last for a very long time, it can serve as valuable protection where asphalt roofs fall short.
